The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) contributes to make Europe a safer, healthier and more productive workplace. The Agency carries out research and development activities, disseminates reliable, balanced and impartial information on safety and health, and organizes awareness campaigns across Europe. Established by the European Union in 1994 and installed in Bilbao, Spain, the Agency brings together representatives of the European Commission, the governments of the Member States, employers ‘ and workers’ organizations, as well as reputable experts from the Member States Union and beyond.
“Marianne Thyssen, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labor Mobility, congratulates and summarizes the importance of this milestone for EUOSHA:
“Twenty-five years ago, we created the EU-OSHA to ensure that health and safety legislation and good practices to implement it are known to everyone, especially workers and workers’ employers. ”
The opportunity to reflect on successes achieved in the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) in Europe in the last 25 years, as well as to consider the future.
Among the topics discussed are the rationale for the creation of EU-OSHA, its proactive approach to digital technology, the challenges and opportunities presented by EU enlargement and the revolutionary nature of the European Pillar of social rights. Participants also reflect on the success of EU-OSHA’s flagship projects, such as the Healthy Workplaces, OiRA and ESENER campaigns, and in particular examine the key roles these projects play in supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. “

“Christa Sedlatschek, Executive Director of EU-OSHA, said:
“One of the great successes of EU-OSHA is that it is now very well connected to companies across Europe. Flagship projects such as the ESENER survey help to strengthen this connection by identifying the needs of businesses and their workers. ”
Former EU-OSHA Director Jukka Takala stresses the importance of providing ongoing support and addressing current and future OSH challenges, echoing one of the key messages of the Agency: “Optimal conditions of safety and health at work are synonymous with economic success. We need to get this message out to politicians, change attitudes and change attitudes in the long run. ”
All agree that pan-European partnerships and the Agency’s tripartite working method are essential to its success. As Hans-Horst Konkolewsky, former director of EU-OSHA, notes, “the Agency has demonstrated the effectiveness of its underlying principle: a tripartite organization with a network of focal points and partners in the Member States and partner countries. This principle has contributed to the development of a common understanding of the goal we want to achieve in protecting workers. ”
