Eyesafe: the lastest asset to reduce visual fatigue

Screen time is a major concern nowadays. Not only does it promote the onset of migraines, it can also permanently decrease visual acuity. Blue light, this recognized sleep disruptor, emitted by monitors inhibits the production of melatonin. Our hormone involved in the synchronization of the sleep and wake cycle. It is based on this observation that the growing popularity of the Eyesafe® certification program is forged.

At CES 2021, last January, Stefan Engel, VP & GM, Visuals Business, Lenovo, spoke about the future of consumer electronics. In it, he described the importance of low blue light solutions and Eyesafe for Lenovo.

The Eyesafe® display standard was developed to provide transparency to consumers. It is based on existing standards and guidelines developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP),, TÜV Rheinland … and Eyesafe.

This technology has been developed by a world-class team of ophthalmologists. Engineers and scientists with decades of experience in electronics, display materials and light management.

Strong change signal

Certification is a strong signal of major change in the world of consumer electronics. Mainly on how to design and develop products.

« With the pandemic and the increased use of screens, the concern is even greater about the subject (exposure to blue light). The more we know about the impacts, the more we are committed to ensuring that our products address the health issues associated with the consequences of high energy visible blue light ».

« As a company » he explains, « we ask our customers what they want and what they need. And we are trying to design it ».

Mr Engel continues: « I think within a certain period of time, a semester or a year … I expect that for tenders, Eyesafe will become a must-have request.» A growing demand from professional accounts, unions and companies. « I expect this to become the norm » he says. Noting that 100% of Lenovo’s monitor activity will be certified in the coming years.

Health-based requirements

For Dr Ralph Chu of the Eyesafe Vision Health Council, « Lenovo exemplifies true market leadership through its commitment to the Eyesafe® standard. The main set of requirements based on human health research for low blue light. I am excited to see a series of new product solutions and a roadmap of new Eyesafe products » (learn more about the EyeSafe series from Lenovo)

« It’s capital. The world is on screens more than ever, during the pandemic. And in this new world, we need to know that consumer electronics were designed for human health ».

The average number of hours of use of digital devices has increased significantly in recent years. More employees are working remotely. Distance learning is becoming more common for students. In the United States, a recent Nielsen study estimates that people spend an average of more than 13 hours a day on digital devices.
