The ALPHA generation is coming! Are you ready?

Understanding and preparing the generation born and most comfortable with technology This heterogeneous group is the first to have been born entirely in the 21st century and to have shared the experience of having lived and been educated during the COVID19. As digital natives, brought up on the introduction of artificial intelligence, ‘gamers’ they are hungry for information, heavily reliant on technology and video, and want to be seen and heard.

Meanwhile, generation AI is already here. Generation Alpha will be entering the job market in just 8 years’ time. It would be wise for their future employers to start preparing by understanding their needs and using this information to deliberately design a comfortable, colourful, engaged, productive and innovative work environment connected

A ‘gamer’ generation in the world of work?

Generation Alpha is distinguished by its mastery of new technologies. Smartphones, tablets and voice assistants are second nature to them, and they interact with technology in new and imaginative ways. They are true ‘pro’ gamers in constant dialogue with the whole world, whatever the time zone

As they enter the world of work, this generation expects companies to use cutting-edge tools and technologies. A generation looking for challenges, the Alpha generation will pave the way for the fusion of digital platforms such as virtual reality and augmented reality, and push the boundaries with the growth of extended reality

This can be seen with the introduction of smart glasses and the use of headsets and haptic devices (the science of touch) such as gloves and joysticks in the workplace.

Workplaces that appeal to Generation Alpha are tangible reflections of a company’s values. For example, a workplace that demonstrates its inclusion of all employees. It will celebrate and be sensitive to the diversity of backgrounds, cultures, experiences and disabilities. This may include designing sensory spaces for people with neurodiversity, integrating gender-neutral private toilets or providing facilities that go beyond the norm. Taking into account the needs of all employees in the workplace meets Gen Alpha’s expectation that the working environment should be highly specialised, personalised and connected. As this generation is accustomed to performing tasks both in person and online, the workplace will require spaces, mainly third places, that encourage interaction and successfully accommodate virtual participants.
